PLEČNIK’S LJUBLJANA

National and University Library (NUK)

National and University Library is one of Plečnik’s most important works. It stands on the site of a former country mansion. Its rustic stone insertions and intermediary alignments give the façade a plastic impression accentuated by projecting English windows. Some jutting stones are archaeological remains of previous buildings on this site. The architect imagined the library as a house of education, so he created a ritual path towards the great reading room rising from the darkness of ignorance to the light of knowledge. The library is a meeting place for students of all Ljubljana’s faculties.

The Church of St Francis of Assisi

The Church of St Francis of Assisi resembles Prague’s Church of the Sacred Heart in Vinohrady. It was constructed in the 1930s. The hall with a level wooden ceiling and an array of high windows creates the impression of an old Christian basilica. All three altars were designed by Jože Plečnik. The furnishing, chandeliers, chapel and baptistery are also breath-taking.
Style: a combination of classical clarity and airiness; spatial arrangement with expressive details.

Mutual Insurance Company

The building, which stands on one of the most prominent locations in the city, was built between 1928 and 1930. At the time, Plečnik was interested in the idea of a double façade, which can be seen here in a dense array of columns detached from the wall making an impression of a second façade. A newly renovated great council room was furnished with copies of Plečnik’s chairs.

Plečnik’s House

The house where Jože Plečnik lived and worked reflects the architect’s modesty and originality in using inexpensive materials left over from his projects. Next to the stove in the kitchen stand the architect’s chair and desk where he used to sketch. There are many personal objects, works of art, drawing tools and models displayed throughout the house. The house keeps an archives of Plečnik’s plans and drawings. Plečnik also arranged a garden with a beehive.

Križanke
Between 1951 and 1956, Plečnik reorganised and renovated the monastery complex of the Medieval German Teutonic order. This being his last important work, he paved the great courtyard, surrounded the old building with new arcades and arranged a restaurant in it. He also renovated the building which separates the courtyard from the open-air summer theatre. In the inner Devil’s Courtyard, he created an exceptional night ambience with lighting arrangement.

The Three Bridges
After the First World War, the Old Carl’s Bridge became too narrow. With his idea to broaden the old bridge with two additional side bridges, Jože Plečnik wanted to bring the river closer to the town and revive the riverbanks. With their funnel shaped position, the new bridges set the square in the central area called the Three Bridges. A particularity of the bridge is the steps leading down to the lower river terrace. They resemble the bridges in Venice and recreate Ljubljana’s Mediterranean character. The Three Bridges provide a view of the Ljubljanica river, the castle hill, the shopping district of Čopova street and Prešeren Square, the symbol of Slovenians.
